BREAKING: Buhari Reappoints Yakubu As INEC Chairman


President Muhammadu Buhari has chosen to renew the tenure of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, by another five years.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015, conducted the election that brought President Buhari into office for a second term.

There was nervousness that Professor Yakubu’s tenure was coming to an end next month, and GBEDU News had not heard of a replacement. 

Mr Yakubu will now be in office till 2025- and will preside over the next Presidential election scheduled to hold on February 18, 2023. 

The reappointment of the INEC chairman, which is subject to Senate confirmation, was announced by Femi Adesina, a spokesperson for the President.

President Muhammadu Buhari has presented the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for a second term in office. 

“In a letter to President of the Senate, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), ‘I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term,’ Mr Adesina said.
